Precision Engineering: Understanding Embossing Roll Specifications (Diameter, TIR, Chrome Plating, and Surface Finishes)
Introduction

When procuring an embossing roll for PVC conveyor belts, reading a specification sheet can be confusing. What does TIR ≤ 0.01 mm mean? Why does chrome plating thickness vary from 0.03 mm to 0.12 mm? How do you choose between mirror polishing and chemical corrosion finishing? This article demystifies the key technical parameters of high-quality embossed rollers, helping you make an informed purchasing decision.

1. Roll Diameter and Length: Up to Φ1000 mm x 6000 mm

Our rollers accommodate a wide range of PVC conveyor belt widths and thicknesses:

  • Maximum roll diameter: Φ1000 mm – Suitable for large-scale calendering or embossing lines.

  • Maximum roll length: 6000 mm – Allows processing of extra-wide PVC belts without seam marks.

2. Chrome Plating Thickness: 0.03–0.12 mm

Hard chrome plating provides a wear-resistant, low-friction surface. A thinner layer (0.03 mm) is sufficient for light-duty embossing, while a thicker layer (0.12 mm) extends service life in abrasive or high-pressure applications. Chrome also improves release properties, preventing PVC adhesion.

3. TIR on Straightness and Concentricity: ≤0.01 mm

TIR (Total Indicator Reading) is the single most important quality metric for rotating rollers. Our TIR of ≤0.01 mm guarantees:

  • Perfect straightness – No wavy patterns on the PVC belt.

  • Concentricity – The outer diameter is precisely centered to the shaft axis, eliminating vibration at high speeds.

4. Surface Finish Options: Beyond Mirror Polish

While mirror polishing (Ra ≤ 0.02 µm) is standard for high-gloss PVC belts, we offer multiple finishes to suit different applications:

  • Sand finish – Creates uniform roughness for better adhesive grip.

  • Spray finish – Produces a controlled porous texture for specialized coating.

  • Chemical corrosion finish – Uses acid etching to create micro-patterns without mechanical stress.

  • Engraving (laser or cutter curving) – For custom logos, repeating patterns, or functional micro-structures.

5. Roll Body and Shaft Materials: Why It Matters
  • Roll body: Seamless steel pipe or integrated forging 45#/20#/42CrMoA steel alloy. Forged materials provide higher density and eliminate internal voids, reducing the risk of cracking under thermal cycling.

  • Roll shaft: Integrated forging 45# steel, heat-treated for strength and machined to precise tolerances.

Cooling Water Channel Design

Effective cooling prevents thermal expansion that would ruin TIR. Our designs include:

  • Big screw pitch channels – Maximizes heat exchange surface area.

  • Multi-flow or cross twin-flow – Ensures uniform temperature across the roller face, critical for wide PVC belts.

Conclusion

A high-quality embossing roller is defined by verifiable specifications: tight TIR, appropriate chrome thickness, correct material forging, and advanced cooling. Always request certified test reports—especially cell-volume detection for ink-based applications—to ensure your roller performs as specified.
